RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to

Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities

In January the Rotary Club of De Aar approached Mrs. Van Wyk, the principal of Veritas High School, to identify a learner to send to the RYLA camp that was to be held at Tikwe Lodge, Virginia in the Free State. She chose Danielle Siljeur, a Grade 10 learner, for this honour.

Danielle travelled with 3 learners from Colesberg High School to Virginia where they were welcomed and entertained by the Rotary Club of Flamingo Welkom. Over the weekend they did many activities in teambuilding and leadership development. They also learned what Rotary International is all about. Danielle enjoyed the weekend alot and said she also learned alot from the workshops as well as the many new friends she met. The Ryla Camp was attended by 75 learners from all over the Free State, a few from Northern Cape and North Western Province.

Danielle received an certificate for attending  the weekend as well as a certificate for being on the winning team. The Rotary Club of De Aar will invite Danielle next term to do a presentation about the weekend at one of their meetings.

As so many lives are lost on our roads during Easter, the Rotary Club of De Aar decided to support this campaigh 100%.

1. Don’t drink and drive.

2. Buckle up

3. Don’t overload.

4. Make sure your vechile is roadworthy before starting your journey.

5. Have a good rest before you embark on your journey.

6. Try to avoid driving after dark if possible.

7. Take a break every 2 hours.

8. Plan the route to your holiday destination and give yourself enough time to reach the destination.

9. Be vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists.

10. Be visible – drive with your lights on.

11 Stay within the speedlimit at all times.

12. Maintain a 2 second following distance which should increase at night and in rainy conditions.

13. Be courteous.

14. Be alert to changing road and weather conditions.

15. Only overtake when it absolutely safe to do so.

16.  Always obey the rules of the road and carry your drivers license with you.

Presidents elect from most of the clubs in District 9320 attended workshops on how to run a club successfully when the new Rotary year started on 1 July 2012.

Mathilda Steinberg of Colesberg was the guest speaker. She demonstrated how food can be served beautifully in an easy and cost effective way. Some of her recipes were presented to each guest in the form of a recipe book that was put together by the Rotary Club. Arthur Strydom supplied the music and the two dancers, Beulah and Abigail Hobbs performed some very interesting dances. Afterwards tea and refreshments were served.

The function was attended by about 60 guests who enjoyed the morning tremendously. One guest mentioned how pleasantly surprised she was with the neatness of the station.

The Rotary club is very thankful to PRASA and the public of De Aar for their support.

Rotary, a volunteer service organization of 1.2 million men and women, made a commitment to immunize the world’s children against polio in 1985 and became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative three years later. The other partners are the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.

Rotary’s primary responsibilities include fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer recruitment. To date, Rotary has already contributed more than $800 million to the polio eradication effort.

With nearly 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas, Rotary reaches out to national governments worldwide to generate crucial financial and technical support for polio eradication. Since 1995, the advocacy efforts of Rotary and its partners have helped raise more than $3 billion in vital funding from donor governments.

Rotary clubs also provide “sweat equity” on the ground in polio-affected communities, which helps ensure that leaders at all levels remain focused on the eradication goal. Over the years, Rotary club members have volunteered their time and personal resources to reach more than two billion children in 122 countries with the oral polio vaccine.

Thanks to Rotary and its partners, the number of polio cases has been slashed by more than 99 percent, preventing five million instances of childhood paralysis and 250,000 deaths. When Rotary began its eradication work, polio infected more than 350,000 children annually. In 2008, fewer than 2,000 cases were reported worldwide.

But the polio cases represented by that final 1 percent will be the most difficult and expensive to prevent for a variety of reasons, including geographical isolation, worker fatigue, armed conflict, and cultural barriers.

That’s why it’s so important to generate the funding needed to finish the job. To ease up now would be to invite a polio resurgence that would condemn millions of children to lifelong paralysis in the years ahead.

The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remain at risk.

In the past this project was well supported by the public and Rotary is sure the same will happen this year.

The initial projects will take place in West Africa, the area of operations for the charity’s 16,500-ton state-of-the-art hospital ship, Africa Mercy , now based in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

“This strategic partnership with Mercy Ships enables Rotary to work with a globally recognized leader in the delivery of vital medical and surgical care to the world’s most vulnerable populations,” says Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair William B. Boyd. “It allows Rotary club members to directly contribute their valuable expertise and skills within the framework of a proven and highly successful health care program.”

Founded in 1978, Mercy Ships uses its hospital ships to deliver free, world-class health care and assistance in capacity building and sustainable development to developing countries. The charity has worked in more than 70 countries, performing services that have had an impact on more than 2.9 million people. Each year, more than 1,200 surgeons, dentists, nurses, health care trainers, teachers, cooks, seamen, engineers, or agriculturalists volunteer their time and skills.

The enormous network of laboratories and health clinics charged with identifying new cases of polio began to monitor the spread of other viruses as well. And the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which Rotary helped create, rose to international prominence as a model for public-private partnerships to address world health issues.

The “plus” in PolioPlus means that Rotarians are doing more than stopping the spread of polio in the last four countries in which it is endemic; they also are building a legacy of infrastructure and partnerships that will support the fight against infectious disease long after polio is gone.

The workshop was presented by PDG Ethne Papenfus from Kimberley and PDG Jaap Steyn from Viljoenskroon..” How to be a vibrant club” was discussed and the De Aar members got lots of interesting information and ideas from the presenters.

The club has a lot of projects and is greatly dependant on the support of the local public and businesses. In October the “Tree for joy” project will kick off again and the public can contribute towards Christmas presents for the elderly at Sonder Sorge. At the end of October, the “Trolley” project will take place where imperishable food will be collected for Op die Kruin. Four Rotarians will attend the District Conference in Port Elizabeth at the end of September.

The theme of the Rotary International President, Kalyan Banergee, is “ Reach within to embrace humanity”.   The Rotary Club of De Aar certainly succeeds in living up to this motto.

Mnr John Burgess (Rotary De Aar Klub) Mnr AP Mockson (Skoolhoof Philipvale, Philipstown) en Me L Kruger (Departementshoof Philipvale Laerskool, Philipstown) saam met van die graad 1 leerlinge van Philipvale Primere skool. Vroeer vanjaar het me L Kruger navrae gedoen by Rotary De Aar of die klub nie vir die 100 graad 1 leerlinge van handskoene en mussies kan voorsien nie. Rotary het toe dadelik werk gemaak daarvan en 100 handskoene aan die skool se graad 1 kinders gan oorhandig. Daar was toe aan die skoolhoof Mnr Mockson belowe dan volgende jaar die klub 100 mussies sal brei en vir die skool skenk. Die ink van die berig in die koerant was nog skaars droog toe twee lede byname Liana van Zyl en Vivienne Burgess  besef die kinders gaan te koud kry en dadelik ingespring en 100 mussies gebrei en gemaak. So vir hulle twee se bydrae wil die klub en skool voor baie dankie se.

They visited Gentle Care in Britstown where Kevin was very impressed with the work that Ivonne and her team are doing. Dictionaries and hand knitted jerseys were handed out at Van Rensburg Primary School.  Back in De Aar they visited Malaycamp Children Ministries, where fruit and puzzles were donated. They visited St. John Primary School and donated hand knitted jerseys and dictionaries which were received by Mr. B.C. Eiman. During a visit to Sonder Sorge, a commode, shower chair and 3 walkers were received by Mrs. Binedell. A visit was also paid to the Joan Wertheim Centre FARR.

At a “soup and sherry” function afterwards, DG Kevin congratulated the club on all their projects. Certificates for community service were handed out to Me. Erida van den Berg,   Cecily Venter and Leana du Preez for sewing about 100 tracksuits that were handed out to the needy the past two years. Me. Mita Kantoor also received a certificate for making up lap blankets from squares knitted by the public. Me. Trudie Engelbrecht, from Cape Town, was also rewarded for more than 100 hand knitted jerseys she made over the years. Me. Marinda Kock was not present to receive her certificate. She knitted more than 200 jerseys, caps and scarves over the past 2 years.

DG Kevin stressed the importance of membership in Rotary and wished the club well on their upcoming project “The Amazing Race” on 9 August 2011.

The Malay Camp Ministries is situated in Nonzwakazi where children from disadvantaged families are looked after during day time. Maria Philip who is in charge there and Magdalena Schoeman is the teacher. Thales and some learners from De Aar High School took part in playing games with the children. Rotary also handed out cake and sweets and something to drink.

Thales is from Matão, São Paulo in Brazil. The town is on the southeast of Brazil, and the town’s nicknames are City of Song and Land of Longing .Matão is one of the Brazilian cities renowned for its Corpus Christi festivities, which have been celebrated since 1948. On this day streets of the city are decorated with temporary “rugs” made of crushed colored glass, coffee powder, and other materials in preparation for a religious procession. These rugs feature religious and municipal scenes and colorful floral and geometric designs

The Tietê-Paraná Waterway is today an interesting leisure and tourism option in the state of São Paulo: 2,400 kilometers of navigable waters that reach 85 cities and extend from the capital up to the state’s extreme western region. The activities offered to tourists are based on their integration with nature and on the historic attractions marked by the path explorers took towards discovering the state’s countryside region. There are boats available to take tourists along the waterway, aquarium parks, dams, waterfalls, islands and bays, aside from bathhouses and vacation spas.

The Tietê river was the first “path” taken by explorers towards the countryside of São Paulo during the first 100 years of the colonization period, when adventurers left the plateau to search for gold and other precious stones and, later on, with expeditions to the interior of the country.

Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the beaches in the state of São Paulo are a special attraction.Of rare beauty, some of these beaches are virtually uninhabited. They are real preserved and sunny paradises surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, with white sand, calm waters, and hospitable people.

The beaches in the South Coast are home to ecologic sanctuaries, areas of native tropical forest and big and modern cities. This ecologic station, 200 kilometers far from the capital city, is an area full of slopes which houses some of the coast’s major ecosystems in their wild state, thanks the systematic preservation, research and educational projects conceived by the Government of the State of São Paulo and carried out by the State Department of the Environment.

The economy of Brazil is the world’s seventh largest by nominal GDP and eight largest by purchasing power parity.Its economy is the largest in Latin American nations and the second largest in the western hemisphere.

His father and mother are involved with Rotary and that’s how he been chosen to become an exchange student to South Africa He is currently in Queenstown by Rotary Club of Lukhanji Sunset hosted. for a year. Thales says that in Brazil they are not used to the cold weather of South Africa. Thales also visit Gentle Care in Britstown which are one of many projects the Rotary Club of De Aar are involved with.

Last night there was a function hosted by Rotary at the Schreiner House where he told the guest his involvement with Rotary and his experiences as an exchange student in Queenstown. He also attend the District conference in Maseru Lesotho and in September 2011 he will attend a conference in Port Elizabeth.

The schools in South Africa differs from many of Brazil especially in the sport. In Brazil all about playing football. .He was also in the Kruger National Park and saw the big 5. Thales is very impressed with the work of Rotary Club of De Aar and thank the club for the new opportunity, created for him and he is very grateful to Rotary Club of De Aar who invited him here. Thales plays guitar in a band called

La Fúria. La Fúria has innovated the music scene and gaining more and more fans in Brazil with its mix of pop / punk. Thales compose the on of the songs on their first demo cd called Positividade. (Positive deeds). Thales want to study medicine next year and met with Dr Torres of the local hospital to get his view on the medical proffession.

Thanks to Rotary and its partners, the number of polio cases has been slashed by more than 99% since 1985 when 35 000 cases were reported in 125 countries.  In 2009 only 1 597 cases were reported worldwide with the only four endemic countries remaining, Afghanistan (38 cases), India (732), Nigeria (388), Pakistan (89) and 350 cases in the rest of the world.

The US $555 million funding agreement between Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation marks another milestone in Rotary’s 25 year legacy of polio eradication work.  Dr. Margret Chan, WHO Director General said, “As an International community, we have few opportunities to do something that is unquestionably good for every country and every child in perpetuity.  Polio eradication is one of these opportunities.

As Distrikswenner, dring FARR van Joan Wertheimsentrum deur na die provinsiale kompetisie.  Verskeie projekte het die kortlys vir die toekennings behaal en was uitgenooi om op 27 Mei vanjaar voorlegging oor hulle onderskeie projekte aan ‘n panel beoordelaars te doen.

Die verteenwoordigers van elke projek het individueel voor die panel in die Britstown Stadsaal verskyn en ook vrae beantwoord.  Die voorleggings het 11:00 begin en tot na 19:00 geduur.  Op 28 Mei was die verteenwoordigers na die gala-aand genooi waar die wenners bekend gemaak was.

Die stigting van Alkoholverwante Navorsing (Foundation for Alcohol Related Research, FARR) is vereer vir die baanbrekers werk ten opsigte van die bekamping van Fetale Alhoholsindroom in De Aar.

Die huidige Gesonde Moeder, Gesonde Baba projek is ‘n uitvloeisel van jarelange Navorsing.  Die onlangse deurbraak met die Gesonde Moeder, Gesonde Baba projek waardeur die FAS voorkomsyfer met soveel as 35% verlaag is, is die eerste suksesvolle gemeenskapsprogram in die wêreld.  Tot op hede is al hierdie projekte sonder befondsing van enige staatsdepartemente uitgevoer.  Vroeër vanjaar het FARR Joan Wertheim ‘n silwer toekenning vir uitmuntende diens van die Noord-Kaap se Premier, Me Hazel Jenkins ontvang.

There will be 50 pupils from different schools from De Aar that will attend the soccer match Nigeria against Greece in Bloemfontein today. Grassrootsoccer which are based in Richmond make 200 soccer tickets available for 4 matches in Bloemfontein. Anna Barrett  (GRS Richmond) and Jesse Cates-Bristol both from America organize the the trips to Bloemfontein. Children from Richmond will attend the match South Africa vs France next week in Bloemfontein.

FARR was represented at the glittering ceremony by Sylvia Swarts, Centre Coordinator, Magdalena Rooi, Annelise Esau and Agnes Pitja, community workers of the centre, and the founder and chairperson of FARR, Prof. Denis Viljoen and Leana Olivier, Chief Executive Officer of the foundation.

Fourteen projects had been shortlisted for this prestigious award honouring projects which embody the Batho Pele principles and the vision of the Premier’s Office “ We belong. We Care. We Serve”

Projects were nominated by government departments in 2009 and a representative committee under the watchful eye of Ernest & Young was responsible for visiting and adjudicating the projects. Five projects were awarded bronze, three projects received silver and one gold.

The award to FARR was in recognition of their exceptional and ground-breaking work in the field of research and combating of foetal alcohol syndrome in the Northern Cape, especially in De Aar and Upington.

According to Prof Denis Viljoen the Premier’s award is just reward for the outstanding service rendered to the community of De Aar by the FARR staff and staff of the “Pink House”

The current “Healthy Mother, Healthy Baby Programme “ was the culmination of previous research which brought to light the high incidence of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. In what can be considered the first ever successful community project a major break through has been achieved in lowering the prevalence of FAS by 30%.

Prof  Viljoen is convinced that the successful programme is now ready to be rolled out to other communities of the Northern Cape and rural towns countrywide.

All of FARR’s programmes in the Northern Cape have to date been carried out without any financial support of government. Prof Viljoen appealed to government departments involved to support FARR with funding and facilities to make the implementation of the model in other communities possible.

The Chief Executive Officer, Leana Olivier, considered the award a wonderful reward for the FARR staff and a richly deserved acknowledgement of the sterling efforts of the community of De Aar to take the message of no alcohol during pregnancy .to heart. Some women find it extremely difficult to stay away from alcohol for 9 months, but they have shown that it could be done.

The support of the community, colleagues in government departments such as Health and Social Development, collaborators from EmpowaGrinaker, Rotary, Steamriders Bikers, church groups Nieuwenfontein Centre, Old Mutual, schools, the media and various other organisations and people was invaluable and FARR was proud to share the award with all these partners.

For Mr Stephan Wertheim, owner of the Joan Wertheim Centre, and his family it was a memorable occasion to have the memory of his wife honoured in this way by FARR and the community.

According to Sylvia Swarts the award was a tribute to De Aar, which had previously been dubbed the FAS capital of SA by the media, but would soon be known as the town that tamed FAS.

GRS and the Gemeenskapsentrum will be hosting a GRS Soccer Holiday Camp the week of December 14^th-18^th.  The Camp will be held at the Richmond Gemeenskapsentrum/Sports Grounds and during each day boys and girls will play soccer matches, participate in group games, obtain HIV/AIDS education and receive a delicious lunch.  Richmond GRS coaches will be registering children and organizing the event in the next few weeks, so be on the lookout!

On Tuesday December 1^st we will be holding a community soccer event, the “Richmond Dream Team Matchup” at the Richmond Gemeenskapsentrum/Sports Grounds.  The event will celebrate World AIDS Day and feature a soccer match between two teams of Richmond’s best soccer players, taken from each of the town’s men’s teams, competing to be the best DREAM TEAM.  The soccer match will begin at 1600 and conclude by 1830.  Fans who arrive before half-time will be entered into a PRIZE RAFFLE for soccer balls and Grassroot Soccer clothing.   We hope all of Richmond will attend to pack the stadium and cheer for their favourite Richmond star players!

Grassroot Soccer has been very busy in October and November.  In October, over 200 youths from Grade 7 and Grade 8 graduated from the GRS Skillz soccer-based HIV/AIDS educational curriculum at Richmond Hoerskool on October 14^th and Ikhaya Middle School on October 23^rd.  Both events were big successes, and the whole Richmond GRS team would like to congratulate the new Skillz graduates on their hard work; we hope you remember these important lessons about HIV/AIDS and take what you have learned into the rest of your lives.  We would also like to thank the administrators and teachers of both Richmond Hoerskool and Ikhaya Senior Primary School, especially Mnr. Maqabangqa and Mnr. Tsotsa, for their willingness to host the Grassroot Soccer curriculum in their schools and help us with the wonderful graduation events.  Baie dankie!

Training of New Coaches:

Because of school exams, in November Richmond GRS focused mostly on planning the expansion of GRS to Colesberg and De Aar.  We also made an effort to strengthen our activities in Richmond, and from November 16^th-November 20^th we held a GRS TOC (Training of Coaches) at the Richmond Gemeenskapsentrum: we are very proud to say that 7 NEW Skillz coaches will now be trained to teach the community’s children about HIV/AIDS through the power of soccer and sports. Die President van Rotary Rina Edwards se wense is op Saterdag 24 Oktober 2009 bewaarheid met die Rotary Amazing Race wat plaasgevind het. Dit was ‘n droom van haar dat so iets in De Aar aangebied word. Soos met alles wat sy begin is dit ‘n sukses. Baie beplanning is in die projek ingesit en moes dit ook so stil as moontlik gehou word en van die lede was half omgekrap as Rina en Gerhard in sirkels begin praat as van die reëlings deurgegee is aan die lede tydens vergaderings.

Teen Donderdag het Rotary begin bekommerd raak oor die paar inskrywings, maar getrou aan De Aar se tradisie is die meeste inskrywings Saterdag minute voor die Race sou begin ontvang. Ten spyte van die wind wat alles wou wegwaai was die 17 Spanne wat ingeskryf baie opgewonde, en die afwagting groot.

Twee deelnemers was baie bekommerd oor waar Noord en Suid is en hulle het so ‘n pienk “ding” by hulle gehad wat blykbaar ‘n kompas was. Die spanne het baie moeite gedoen met hul kleredrag wat by hul spannaam aangepas het. Daar was ook twee spanne wat ingeskryf het op motorfietse. Die dames was veral mooi opgetof party met mooi naels, ander met mooi skoentjies, nie daaraan gedink dat ‘n paar tekkies dalk meer geskik sou gewees het vir die geleentheid nie.

Ander spanne het die hele familie in hul voertuie gehad. Dan was daar span Gorgeous wat twee kinders saamgebring het wat blykbaar al die hardloop werk namens hulle span moes doen, maar ongelukkig het Rotary uit ‘n betroubare bron daarvan gehoor en is alle spanne toe ‘n stempel op hulle hande ontvang om te keer dat iemand namens die span deel te neem. Net ter inligting laasgenoemde span het 17 de geëindig.

Die met die mooi skoentjies het al by die eerste stop agter die swembad skoen uitgeskop en die Race kaalvoet klaargemaak. Die met die mooi naels het by Sonder Sorge gegrou dat die stof waai, met die gevolg dat van hulle agterna sekerlik gaan soek het tussen die kluite of hulle nie van hulle verlore naels weer kan herwin nie. Daar was ‘n paar spanne wat blykbaar tot ‘n meter diep gegrawe, dis nou as ‘n mens die storie kan glo, maar hulle kon nie die pampoen pitte kry nie. Die blikkies kos, sagte speelgoed, blikkies hondekos en koekies seep wat ingesamel is sal aan behoeftige persone of Welsynsorganisasies oorhandig word.

Die spanne wat mooiste geklee was “DL Clowns”, Leandra van Zyl en Dewald Snyman,” PINK”, Doreen Engelbrecht en Petro Carstens en, “F. Gorgeous” Donald Edwards en Piet De Villiers ( kon nie mooi hoor waarvoor die F staan ek vermoed dit is nie geskik vir publikasie). Tafel Ronde De Aar 223, het as organisasie die meeste spanne ingeskryf, Jurie van Zyl en jou lede, dankie vir julle bydrae en deelname. Die Amazing Race was ook opvoedkundig van aard, want van die deelnemers het nie geweet waar Gina Straat is, of waar die Pienkhuis (FARR Joan Wertheim Sentrum) geleë is.

Dit was dus ook gepas dat een van die spanne wat ‘n prys vir uithou vermoeë gewen het, veral by die gegrawery se naam Krappies was.

Die span wat toe gewen het was Span Mercedes, met Hennie Diedericks en Riaan Skipper (R1000.00), Hennie en Riaan was so gaaf om hulle R1000.00 prysgeld terug te gee aan Rotary om ‘n projek daarmee aan te pak. 2de prys is gewen deur Desperate Houswifes, met Gwen Viljoen en Cornel Venter (R500.00), (blykbaar het die twee dadelik iets met hulle wengeld aangekoop om dorings uit hulle voete uit te haal), 3de prys deur Span Buffy met Buffy Barlow en Gerhard de Lange (R250.00).

Die spanne van 4-8 het elkeen R100.00 gewen. Alle deelnemers het pryse gewen tydens die gelukkige prystrekkings. Dankie aan al ons borge, want sonder hulle sal die dag nie ‘n sukses gewees het nie.

Rotary wil graag ook aan elkeen van die 17 spanne wat ingeskryf het bedank vir hulle deelname, want sonder hulle inskrywings sou die Amazing Race nie kon plaasvind. Dan aan die Hoërskool De Aar vir die gebruik van hulle rugbyveld, Junior Primêre Skool vir die leen van hulle mini Rugby pale en FARR Joan Wertheim Sentrum vir die gebruik van hulle sentrum, Sonder Sorge Oue Te Huis, vir hulle “tuin” en die Diereskuiling vir hulle perseel en die perseel van Excelsiorpark. Dan ook aan die Skoukoukomitee Mnr Charel Marais vir die gebruik van hulle terrein.

Aan Schreinerhuis en hulle personeel wat hulle plek Saterdagaand beskikbaar gestel het vir funksie en gesorg het vir die heerlike slaaie en tuis gebakte brood, baie dankie. Aan G Edwards en Sons en by name Donald en sy personeel vir die voorbereiding van die akkers waar pampoenpitte weggesteek was en ook vir die akker waar die pitte geplant moes word. Dankie ook aan die Skoukomitee vir die gebruik van hulle terrein waar die begin en einde van die Amazing Race plaasgevind het. Laaste maar nie die minste alle Rotariërlede en alle vrywilligers wat die punte beman het.

Alle deelnemers het gesê hulle het dit baie geniet, en sal beslis volgende jaar weer wil deelneem. Party het berig dat hulle Maandag pyne gehad het waar hulle nie eers gedink het hulle het spiere (plekke) nie. So hier is die nuwe datum vir volgende jaar, so begin asseblief te oefen om fiks te raak, die eerste Amazing Race sal ‘n vulletjie wees teen volgende jaar s’n wat op Woensdag 16 Junie 2010 beplan word. Volgende jaar hoop ons alle Staatsdepartemente, Besighede , Banke, skole ensovoorts sal volgende jaar ‘n span of twee inskryf.

Efforts are focused in several key areas, including nutrition, health, sanitation and employment. Last year a group of Rotary members from the Rotary club of Caroll Creek, Frederick, Maryland, USA visit the local Rotary club to give more information on establishing a similar partnership in De Aar.

The coordinator of the project Jonathan Warner, Ted Luck and Joel Tjornehoj visit the local Rotary club. Rina Edwards President of the local Rotary club, Gerhard Engelbrecht coordinator of the project in De Aar and Anna Kleynhans a member of Rotary De Aar met with Jonathan and his team last Thursday in De Aar. The visitors visit all the possible venues that could host such a project.

They was very impressed by the facilities in De Aar. They also met with members of  the local Anglican Church, as the church in America are also part of the project. They also visit the FARR house in De Aar. In June 2009 another team of experts from the USA will visit Richmond and De Aar to strengthen their relationship with the local Rotary club.

Jonathan M Warner from Caroll Creek, Frederick, Maryland, USA (Rotary Club of Caroll Creek) and one of the coaches of the Grassrootsoccer team in Richmond. A delegation of the Rotary Club of Caroll Creek also visit the De Aar Rotary Club .

Klub President, Rina Edwards het meer inligting oor die plaaslike klub gegee.  Sy het vertel van die verskillende projekte soos die betrokkenheid by die Joan Wertheim Sentrum FARR; die “Tree of Joy” projek asook die “Trollie by Checkers” Projek vir Sonder Sorge se inwoners; die Truie projek vir Laerskole, die hulp wat aan Gentle Care gebied word en nog vele meer.  Die belangrikste projek vanjaar is natuurlik die 150 splinternuwe rolstoele , ter waarde van R450 000.00 wat in die hele Pixley ka Seme streek versprei word.  Daar word deur die jaar hard gewerk deur die 13 lede om fondse in te samel. Die volgende fondsinsamelings projek is die “Amazing Race” wat op Saterdag 24 Oktober aangebied word. Me. Edwards het genoem dat die klublede lekker kan saamwerk en ook lekker kan saamkuier tydens sosiale geleenthede.

Hierna is verskillende soorte sop en brode bedien. Die aand is deur gaste sowel as Rotariers geniet.

Muntlegging ten bate van FARR

9 September, is International Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Day, which is celebrated all over the world to make people aware of the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy. The first ever FAS day was held on 9 September 1999. This date was specifically chosen to remind the world every year on the 9th day of the 9th month that a woman is pregnant for nine months and should not drink any alcohol during this time. By doing so she will protect her unborn child against FAS.

All over the world, from the time zone of New Zealand to the further most reaches of Alaska, bells will be rung at 09:09 as a warning to people everywhere about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy. These events will be dedicated to people with FAS, their families and everyone involved in caring for them.

De Aar is not the only town in the country with a high incidence of FAS but it is one of the few towns and communities actively trying to do something to prevent FAS. Through good cooperation between the local municipality, departments of health, education, social development and agriculture as well as the support of organisations like Rotary De Aar and other local individuals  wonderful breakthroughs have already been achieved.

All the stakeholders will therefore get together in De Aar on 9 September to further promote awareness of FAS and to demonstrate to the rest of South Africa that we in De Aar are united against FAS.

On 09:09 the church bells, school bells and handmade “Karoo bells” will ring out in De Aar as a warning to mothers not to drink alcohol during their pregnancies.

The worldwide symbol for FAS is a knotted rope, which will also be worn by everyone on 9 September 2009.  The rope symbolizes the umbilical cord, nervous system and spinal cord. The circle symbolizes the womb, baby’s head, the brain and the earth. The knot represents everybody who cares for someone with FAS and the frayed edges of the rope represent the damaged nerves of a child with FAS.

On Wednesday 1 July 2009 the VLV from De Aar handed over 30 track suits to be distributed among the needed at the FARR house.

Caroll Greek Rotary Club

Jonathan Warner of the Caroll Greek Rotary Club announced at the house their Club together with the Rotary Club of Frederick USA to donate 1000 USA dollars via the Rotary Club of De Aar  for the feeding scheme of the children. The Manager of ABSA bank me Rina Bezuidenhout also announced their participation of the project.

Past President Elsabe Thiart induct the incoming President Rina Edwards

On Wednesday 1 July 2009 was the formal induction of the next president of De Aar Rotary Club. The preparations started early the morning to ensure that the evening will be a great success, and it was like always.

As the guest arrived a slide show was displayed with photos taken the past two years, of all the highlights. Good memories where recalled as some of the members said, “Hey, there’s my pic, do you remember that?”

Gerhard Engelbrecht, Secretary of De Aar Rotary Club started the evenings activities as Master of Ceremonies. Louise had the honor to open with prayer. Harold instated a toast on the State President of South Africa and Rotary International. The induction of Rina Edwards was done by Past President Elsabe Thiart.

Julia Firth, a Rotary exchanged student from 1982, now from Canberra Australia told everybody about her experiences during the past few years. She also mentioned the actions and activities of Rotary abroad. Julia congratulated Rina and whished her al the luck for the year to come.

Jonathan Warner, Caroll Greek Rotary Club from the United States of America also congratulated Rina on behalf of Rotary International and Ted Luck, President of the Rotary Club of Frederick Maryland, USA. Jonathan gave an overview of Rotary USA and some of the aspects that had an influence on the activities and projects of Rotary. Jonathan stipulated that it is now the time that Rotary has to be strong and everything has to be done to guide the youth of South Africa. Jonathan said that the Grass Root Soccer project is one of the best ways to guide the youth and it is starting to be successful.

The big surprise of the evening was announced and Rina had the change to officially launch the De Aar Rotary Club Website by pressing the enter button to display the website for the first time. The reaction was overwhelming and everybody was amazed with the new website. Rina thanked Gerhard and the NC BTV Technology Team for their efforts and sponsorship to make this dream come true. Jacques Dumas the Web Designer and guest of the evening received a token of appreciation from Laura on behalf of the Rotary Club of De Aar.

The evening was wonderful and the catering was outstanding. Rina is by far an outstanding President, since she does everything herself, from the catering to the decorations. The evening’s events where closed with the Sergeant at Arms and like usual Anna had the sharp eye and memory to point out the unlawful and unaccepted actions of members as well as guest and “fine” them for charity.

Rina Edwards wat vir haar derde termyn as president van die De aar Rotaryklub optree, Gerhard Engelbrecht wat as sekretaris sal diens doen en Luara Gilbert wat as tesourier sal optree, het op Vrydag 17 April tot Sondag 19 April met sowat 300 ander Rotariërs Distrik 9320 op die dorp vergader. Dit sluit klubs isn van Noordwes, Noord-Kaap, Oos-Kaap, Vrystaat en Lesotho in.

In die streek is 53 klubs, Anne Botha van die Rotaryklub van Orkney is die nuwe Distriksgoewerneur indie plek van Jaap Steyn van die Rotaryklub op Viljoenskroon. Die jaarlikse konferensie van distrik 9320 word vanjaar op die skip MSC Sinfonia gehou. Dit sal met die Rotariërlede van Vrydag 20 November tot Maandag 23 November na ‘n Potugesse eiland naby Mosambiek vaar.

Dit sal voorwaar ‘n ervaring soos min weesvir die wat die seevaart il mee maak.

Ted Luck - Frederick, Maryland

Ted is an active member of the Frederick community.  He is currently the president elect of the Rotary Club of Frederick.  Ted served on numerous boards including the United Way of Frederick County, the Maryland Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, Advocates for Homeless Families and the Frederick Arts Council.

Ted lives in Frederick, Maryland with Alyce, his wife of 35 years.  They have two adult children. Their daughter Tracie is an outstanding opera singer and lives in Philadelphia.  Their son T.J is a lab technician/researcher with a firm in Columbia, Maryland. T.J. and Courtney, his wife of three years, live in Frederick, Maryland. He visit the Rotary Club of De Aar in February 2009, with Jonathan Warner to discussed the Grassrootsoccer Program with members of De Aar Rotary Club.

HELEN GRELL (CEO SAVE THE CHILDREN SWEDEN , KARLSTAD) JORGEN ARINELL (KARLSTAD, SWEDEN) ANNA KLEYNHANS, SYLVIA SWARTS(FAS) AND RINA EDWARDS

During a visit of an old friend from Karlstad, Sweden, Mr Jorgen Arinell to the local Hospice where Save the Children Sweden are involved in a project, of which he is the coordinator, he also took the opportunity to visit the local Rotary Club. He was accompanied by Helene Grell, the chairperson of Save the Children Sweden in Karlstad. They met the local President of Rotary, Rina Edwards, and Gerhard Engelbrecht , a member of Rotary and friend of many years of Jorgen. Mr Arinell told them that a Rotary Club in Karlstad had approached him about funds which they could obtain and which they wished to invest in a project in South America involving children. Jorgen them told the person about his involvement in De Aar where he knew there was a Rotary Club. He also knew a member who could assist with such a project. The Club immediately agreed and requested him to contact the Rotary Club in De Aar during his visit.

Gerhard and Rina informed the two visitors of all the possibilities for involvement of the Club in Sweden. The FARR house or pink house, as it is commonly known in De Aar, caught their interest and Rina took them to the project where they were received by Silvia Swart, who is running the project. She explained how the project operated and what their needs were. Helene Grell also brought along children’s clothes, books and other toys to be used by the children. The visitors were both impressed with everything they saw and heard about the work done at the house. Helene was especially pleased that pregnant mothers were also part of the project.

Now we can only hold thumbs that the Rotary Club in Sweden does become involved in the project. With someone as capable as Jorgen Arinell handling the negotiations on behalf of Rotary De Aar we are confident of a positive outcome. We also hope that Helene was so touched by her observations and experiences there they should Save the Children Sweden in future look for new projects they will know where to come.

The theme of John Kenny for 2009-10 is “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands”. I want to ask all of you to go out there and promote Rotary amongst your friends, colleagues and family. The club has been growing steadily since 5 years ago, when there were only 3 of us left.

We have some wonderful and very successful projects running. Whenever it is possible, come and help serve soup, deliver a wheelchair or just chat to an elderly person at the Old Age Home. This way you can do “Service Above Self:.
I want to thank Gerhard and his team sincerely for the time and effort they have put into this project. To all Rotarians from other clubs – hope you enjoy the glimpse into Rotary Club of De Aar.
